Volunteer Opportunities

The Plum Senior Center is run on volunteer power. Perhaps you could help with an activity such as driving for Home-Delivered Meals, instructing an art or craft, serving the Center’s meals, reading to elementary school students or telephone reassurance to the frail and elderly.  Each volunteer records his own hours of service on our volunteer sign up sheet located at the greeters’ desk.  All volunteers with 75 Hours or more of service are invited to our annual banquet in their honor. We’d love to have you join our “family”.

Information and Assistance

Earlene, our information specialist can give you information about programs such as tax, utility, and garbage rebates, income tax preparation, PACE applications, Apprise (medical insurance counseling) SSI and food stamps, PAT bus passes, ACCESS and OPT senior transportation, handicapped parking permits, reduced license fees, energy assistance, and Neighborhood Legal Services.

Trips

The Center schedules several trips each month within Allegheny County, to various shopping centers as well as local attractions such as Carnegie Science Center, Heinz Regional History Center, and Phipps Conservatory.

Trips out of Allegheny County are available through our Trip Coordinator. Information on the upcoming offerings is found on the clip boards outside of the Kitchen door. See Chuck for more information.

Prime Time Health & Fitness

Tailored for older adults, this program focuses on strengthening and endurance, flexibility, cardio vascular and functional fitness training.  Adults 60 and older who are healthy or working on renewing health are excellent consumers for this program in which individuals work within their limitations. Water Aerobics and other fitness classes like Yoga and Tai Chi are offered periodically. (See Coleen, our instructor, or Chuck for more information on these as well as a new program for Highmark subscribers)

What keeps us Going ?……You!

The Plum Senior Community Center is run in part by grants from the Allegheny County Department of Aging and Plum Borough.  Another means of helping us defray costs and to keep the center growing is through individual contributions.  Once a year, we ask for a contribution from each member to ensure the continuation of services at your senior center. We also display a Memorial Wreath each Holiday Season to remember your loved ones.

The Center is also a United Way donor option designee.  Please ask the office staff for information on how your family and friends can choose to designate a United Way pledge to the Center. Our United Way Contributor Choice Number is 297.

Aside from grants and contributions, the Center also appreciates charitable gifts.  Quite simply, these ‘gifts’ in the form of specific items or monetary bequest, can serve only to benefit Plum Senior Community Center.

These grants and contributions do meet many of our expenses, but they fall short of meeting all of our needs.  We need your donations to keep our program running.  We suggest a daily donation of $1.50 for the congregate meal as well as for the participation in any of the centers activities.  An appropriate container for your donation is located at he Greeter’s desk where you sign in, others are found throughout the Center.

With these various gifts and donations, the Center can continue to grow and develop into a facility which offers a warm and hospitable atmosphere for the adults in the area.

Thank you for Helping!
