Ruus Elementary School
Children are our most valuable natural resource.
Ruus Elementary School, located in south Hayward, is the largest and most ethnically diverse elementary school in the Hayward Unified School District.

According to our latest enrollment data, the racial/ethnic distribution of Ruus' 909 students is as follows: 47.98% Hispanic, 15.25% Asian, 10.87% African American, 12.33% Filipino, 7.62% Caucasian, 5.49% Pacific Islander, and .45% Native American.

The staff, students, school administration, and other school groups such as the School Site Council, Student Study Team, and the Leadership Team work together to provide a quality educational program at Ruus School.

Approximately 46% of Ruus students are Limited English Proficient. We are meeting the needs of Ruus' diverse population through bilingual instruction (Spanish) in grades kindergaten through grade six. The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program is available to students with languages other than Spanish. Our "Sheltered" classrooms provide in-class ESL for students as needed.

We encourage parents to be involved in a variety of programs sponsored by the school such as: Parent Education Nights/ Parent Forums/ Rolling Readers/ and Parent Socials.

All students are provided equal access to the core curriculum by instructional practices that meet their needs regardless of language, socio-economic status or abilities.

To further our students' computer skills, Ruus is seeking a technology grant to purchase multimedia software. We would like to obtain a site license for Kid Pix Studio Deluxe.  This creative program would allow our students to draw, paint, and animate their assignments in their curricular areas. Kid Pix Studio Deluxe would be an essential component in our creative classrooms.
