"About 1813, Richard Carpenter sold his land in Newtown, Chemung, NY, and bought land in Angelica. At this time he removed his wife and eight children to Allgany Co.  He farmed this land until 1819, when he bought  land along Black's Creek, in what is now West Almond, Allegany Co. NY. NOTES
1800: *Richard is listed on the same census page and adjacent to his brother's William, & Samuel and his father Joshua.
1810: *The 1810 census is the only time that Richard uses his middle initial in the census.  It also is the 1st. time that another Richard Carpenter is living in the same area.  The second Richard Carpenter  had moved to Steuban Co. NY by the 1820 census. Brothers, William and Samuel and father, Joshua are still living in the same area as this Richard A. Carpenter. Richard signed his land deeds using A. as his middle name..
A relative, Maria "Van Horn" Grovsner, daughter of James Van Horn, b. 1808, states that Richard Carpenter may have moved west or died after 1810.  That may be the source of earlier genealogists stating Richard died after 1810.
1820:   *In 1820 Richard  moved his family to a  farm on Blacks Creek in Allegany Co. in what is now called West Almond."  History of West Almond, 150 Years  has this entry;  "At this time he removed his wife and eight children to a farm on Black's Creek, in what is now West Almond, Allegany Co. NY.  This was the family farm.  His son, Richard Ellison Carpenter, kept the farm until his death in 1868, when it was bought by the Linsley family."
1830:  Richard's oldest son, William Smith Carpenter, is now married .  The other 3 sons are still at home.
1840:  Ellison carpenter is now listed as "head of Household."  Richard, now 70 appears to be retired.
Richard's wife would be about 67-68.  The female, age 15-20 could be hired help, but a likely possibility is a grand daughter.  Ellison remained a batchelor all his life.
Past genealogists have not mentioned the name of Richard A. Carpenter's wife's name, as far as I can find.  She signed at least two land deeds, of which I have copies.(See Land Deeds in the Index).  Her name was Mehitable, spelled in the document as "Mehettable."  Family History carried down from two of Richard A. Carpenter's son's give her  last name as "Allen"
Richard's  second son was.

Samuel Allen Carpenter
His descendants carry Allen as a middle name to this day.  Richard's fourth son was David Howell Carpenter, he passed the Allen name on to his only daughter,

Elizabeth Allen Carpenter.
Elizabeth, b. 1841 in West Almond and died in Santa Barbara, California, was my husband's  great aunt.
